What OEKO-TEX Certification Actually Tests For, and Why It Matters for Intimate Wear
There is a label on some of the clothing you own that most people walk past without a second glance: OEKO-TEX Standard 100. It appears on tags and product pages with growing frequency, and like many certifications it has come to signal quality without most shoppers knowing what it actually certifies. For anyone who cares what sits against their most sensitive skin, that is worth understanding.
What OEKO-TEX actually is
OEKO-TEX is an independent international association founded in 1992 by textile research institutes in Austria and Germany. It runs one of the world's most rigorous textile testing systems. Unlike certifications that rely on self-reporting, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 requires independent laboratory testing of the finished fabric that will actually touch skin, not just the raw materials or the process.
It is not awarded once and forgotten. It requires annual renewal against the current version of the standard, and the standard itself is reviewed each year as research develops and thresholds tighten. A fabric certified today has met the most current version of a genuinely demanding safety standard.
What the testing involves
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests for a long list of potentially harmful substances. These include pesticide residues that can remain in natural fibres, heavy metals such as lead and nickel that can be introduced through dyeing and finishing, and formaldehyde, which is used in some fabric finishes and is linked to skin sensitisation. It also tests pH, because fabric that is too acidic or too alkaline can be less comfortable against skin, and colour fastness, so dyes stay put rather than transferring during wear and washing. It covers substances that have been restricted by regulators in Europe, the US and internationally. The list is comprehensive and updated as the science develops.
The classification levels
Not all OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certifications are the same. The standard runs across four product classes, each with different threshold levels, set according to how much skin contact the fabric will have. Class IV covers decorative materials with no real skin contact. Class III covers outer garments with limited contact. Class II covers most standard clothing with direct skin contact. Class I is the most stringent, originally developed for babies' and young children's products, and it applies to fabrics intended for the most sensitive skin. Its thresholds are meaningfully tighter than the other classes.
Why this matters for intimate wear
Intimate skin is among the most sensitive on the body, so it makes sense to want the fabric against it tested to the highest standard rather than one designed for outer layers. This is exactly where most underwear quietly falls short. A brand can hold OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification at Class II, the level for standard direct-skin-contact clothing, and describe itself as certified without ever mentioning which class. For fabric that sits against the most sensitive skin all day, Class II is not the tier you would choose if you had the choice.

It is worth noting what it does not cover, too: it does not certify sustainability of the process, or performance qualities like breathability or softness.
